27. Tamaha (Haskell
County)
Located high on a bluff, this is one of the oldest towns
in Oklahoma. Originally called Pleasant Bluff, it was a steamboat landing on the
Arkansas River prior to the Civil War. Many choctaws entered the Choctaw Nation
at this point after making their way overland to the Mississippi River and then
continuing their journey by steamer via the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers. By
1850, Tamaha was a busy Choctaw village and trading hub. On June 15, 1864,
General Stand Watie and his Confederate forces captured the Union steamboat J.R.
Williams, which was on the way to Fort Gibson with a shipment of supplies valued
at $120,000. This was the farthest inland naval battle of the Civil War. General
Watie, a Cherokee, was the last Confederate general to surrender at the end of
the war. The cemetery at Tamaha is one of the oldest in Oklahoma. Today the town
caters to the recreational trade associated with Robert S. Kerr Lake. Located
northeast of Stigler.

was moved to Doaksville, then returned to the Tuskahoma area in 1883. In 1884 a

in 1891. The old cemetery, also in this vicinity, contains the graves of many
wellknown Choctaw leaders. Located northeast of Clayton on

29. Wirt (Carter)
The most prosperous business in Wirt in the 1920s was the
undertaking parlor. Most of the time at least one corpse was being prepared for
burial, and often several were lined up. Extreme lawlessness ruled and police
officers were commonly killed or wounded. Men and women alike were stabbed,
shot, or found with their skulls crushed. Founded in 1913 with the development
of Carter County oil pool, the town was mainly a collection of shacks originally
called Ragtown. It burned four or five times and each time was doggedly rebuilt.
Located within the city limits of Healdton.
